Sunday, July 8, 2018: Annual Picnic & Auction
Rain or Shine!!!

Well, it didn't rain.  Instead, it was a magnificent day for an outstanding picnic and a very special auction!  John Spain was in his glory amidst friends and cacti lovers.  He and Becky Lynn were the most gracious hosts of the CCSS annual picnic.  About 50 people attended the function, including 8 members of the Cactus and Succulent Society of Massachusetts, and one member of the Philadelphia Cactus and Succulent Society.  We were honored that these friends made such a long drive in support of John and CCSS.

The picnic came first--nothing comes between CCSS members and a groaning table of food.  As usual, we were like pied piper children following the smell of the delicious, mounded pan of fired chicken.  Then we added scoops of many, many different summer salads to our plates, and deviled eggs, of course.  When we could came up for air, we went back for dessert.  There were pies and cream puffs, cookies, fresh fruit, and a to-die-for blueberry torte.

Bellies full, it was time to start spending money.  Matt, our auctioneer was excellent, considering the huge task before him.  John's greenhouse was packed to the rafters -- anything in a pot had to go.  These weren't run-of-the-mill cacti.  Many of them were ribbon winners from previous shows.  The bids were moved along as quickly as possible, one plant after another.  In some cases, bidding was fierce although no bids exceeded $100.  The highest bid of the day of $80 (Fred Kattermann's Copiapoa #133x133A) was given a round of applause.  Everyone went home tired, but smiling as they carried their treasures to their cars.  Thank you to all who attended and bid.  John has donated all of the proceeds of this auction to CCSS.  Thank you to John for his generosity, and congratulations to all the folks who bid & won plants.  Below are photos of a few of the auctioned plants:

Euphorbia squarrosa    Gymnocalycium oenanthemum        Old Euphorbia sp.
